We have to at some level understand them, what drove them, to choose to live violently. I don't know that I would go so far as to say we must empathize with our oppressors -- but I do believe we must investigate, with intentional empathy, the conditions which drove them to violence so that we can outlive them while also resisting any urge to succumb to becoming oppressors in our own way.
